In the midst of this COVID-19 pandemic, we are facing a lot of challenges in our daily lives, having to adapt to new norms.
The theme “SHIFTING PARADIGMS, CHANGING PRACTICES” befits the current situation. The almost “routine” medical procedure of blood transfusion has come to the fore, requiring a re-visit of this old practice as the number of blood donations have reduced during the lockdown period and the safety concerns of possible virus transmission through the blood products.
The fundamental change must shift towards Patient Blood Management or PBM which focuses on the patient rather than the product to improve patient outcomes by optimizing haemoglobin and haemostasis.
New therapies have also changed the way we manage our patients especially in rare haematological disorders where the once reliance on blood transfusions for survival have been replaced by these therapies, improving their quality of life.
Let’s come together to make this an enjoyable and educational meeting. Together we change for the better future.
